Industrial Disease And Physical Causes

A chronic ailment that occurs as a result of an activity at work is called an occupational or industrial disease. The nature of the ailment varies from one occupation to another. A serious injury that happens as a result of a fall at work does not qualify under this definition.

In the United Kingdom, occupational ailments covered by disablement benefit fall into four categories, those caused by a physical agent, a biological agent like a plant, animal or micro-organism, a chemical agent or a miscellaneous cause.

Radiation exposure is one subcategory of a physical cause of work-related ailment. This may be electromagnetic radiation, radiant heat or ionizing particles. Workers in the nuclear energy industry may suffer from exposure to ionizing particles or electromagnetic radiation, including gamma rays or ultraviolet.

Writer's cramp is another example of a work-related complaint that has a physical origin. The scientific name for this type of complaint is focal dystonia. It afflicts people who do a lot of writing, typing or maneuvering of a computer mouse. While this obviously includes secretaries and other clerical workers, people who create building plans with the aid of a computer are also involved.

'Housemaid's Knee' is caused by prolonged pressure on the knee. It may also be the result of repeated friction. This is suffered by people who work on their knees, like people who lay flooring or scrub floors.

Occupational deafness is another form of industrial disease that is triggered by physical causes. It happens after one year of exposure to industrial noise. This can afflict people who use jackhammers to break up pavement, or by people who operate various types of saw, like big, loud, circular saws. People who work around massive engines or around firearms may also become deaf.
