Why Chiropractic Adjustments May Sometimes Require an X-Ray - Chiropractors in NYC

By Steven Schram DC

To some patients' surprise, some practitioners require that their new patients receive a chiropractic x-ray. This is particularly confusing since the most expected examination is 100% physical. In fact, most appointments consist of just this. However, it is important to ensure that a correct diagnosis has been made before a treatment regimen is chosen. Regardless of whether an x-ray is performed, it is guaranteed that any imaging will occur after symptoms have been discussed and an examination has been performed.

A palpation and an examination of the neck and spine is the first step in a typical chiropractic examination. In order to obtain a chiropractic diagnosis, the practitioner will apply gentle pressure to the troubled areas. There are, however, conditions that even a skilled chiropractor cannot identify in this manner. If a chiropractor feels like an accurate diagnosis cannot be reached through the physical exam, x-rays may be requested.

Using chiropractor x-rays, the practitioner may be able to uncover previously unknown conditions. Despite this, the majority of issues stem from simple vertebral misalignment. After a diagnosis has been reached, an adjustment is often performed to begin treatment. In some cases, however, certain equipment may be utilized in order to provide deeper treatment.

Some conditions, including infections, inflammation, and growths, require treatment from a different doctor. In order to rule out or confirm the existence of these serious conditions, chiropractic x-rays may be used. They may also be used to determine where you should seek additional medical treatment.

A chiropractor may choose to perform an x-ray for a number of good reasons. Athletic injuries and injuries in older patients are just two examples of where imaging can be irreplaceable. Additionally, if pain continues even after chiropractic treatment, an x-ray can help to rule out more serious issues. Of course, should the pain be due to serious trauma, an x-ray will likely be required immediately.

A thorough chiropractic examination is often all that is needed to discover the cause of neck and back discomfort. Chiropractors are well known for being able to find the root cause of the pain even when the source is located far from the site of pain. A confirmation of diagnosis may require an x-ray. Severe misalignments may require imaging in order to determine the location of an invisible cause. It is sometimes necessary for the problem to be localized to a specific cervical or lumbar area. This means that the treatment regimen can be more specific and generate quicker results.

Fortunately, chiropractors can perform the required x-ray in their office. There is no need to go to another doctor's office. After a diagnosis is made, treatment can begin immediately.
