EMTs and Their Work Experiences

By Carol Nadolny

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) provide life saving services and often put themselves near dangerous situations. It is important that they are trained properly so that they are well equipped to handle numerous situations in a safe and secure way. EMTs are trained to assess a patient's condition, and to perform such emergency medical procedures which are needed to maintain a patent airway with adequate breathing and cardiovascular circulation until the patient can be transferred to an appropriate destination for advanced medical care.

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) provide vital and often life-saving medical care and treatment to patients when dispatched to an accident, crime scene, or other emergency situation by a 911 operator. EMTs must assess a patient's current condition while simultaneously trying to determine if the patient has a pre-existing medical condition that could impact the treatment provided. The EMT follows strict guidelines at all times in the course of administering pre-hospital care and transport. The job of an EMT can be both exciting and rewarding.

Emergency Medical Technician Job Description

The EMT Paramedic Job description differs based on where the EMT/Paramedic is employed. EMT's and paramedics employed by fire departments work about fifty hours per week. Those employed by hospitals often work in between 45 and 60 hours per week, and those in private ambulance services, around 45 and 50 hours. A few of these employees, particularly those in police and fire departments, are on call for extended intervals.

People's lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics. A paramedic is an emergency medical technician with additional advanced training to perform more difficult medical procedures. Incidents as varied as automobile accidents, heart attacks, drowning, childbirth, and gunshot wounds all require immediate medical attention. EMTs and paramedics provide this vital attention as they care for and transport the sick or injured to a medical facility as part of the EMT Paramedic job description.

Advancement Possibilities and Employment Outlook

Many emergency medical technicians choose to stay in their roles for extended periods of time, but advancement opportunities do exist. Some EMTs decide to become managers and administrative directors, while others pursue careers in teaching. Those who grow tired of the demanding field can become dispatchers or physician assistants. Many people also work as EMTs as a first step into healthcare jobs such as registered nurses or doctors.
