Learn about Microtia

By Yvonne Brixey

My kid has been diagnosed with atresia microtia of the ear...now what? What is atresia microtia of the ear? Atresia is a congenital condition or birth problem where a normal passage in the body is closed or misshapen, in this case, the ear canal. This birth defect can be accompanied by hearing difficulties and most certainly does in the more harsh cases. Microtia is also a congenital ear affliction where the ear is either deformed, little or totally missing. Microtia and atresia can be accompanied by other defined syndromes or can be isolated in the kid. This ear deformity can be either one sided (affecting only one ear) or bilateral (affecting both ears).

Microtia is diagnosed by four grade levels: Grade 1 microtia is when the child develops an ear but it is misshapen and smaller compared to ordinary. When a child has grade 1 the deformed ear is present and functional. Surgery for grade 1 would be for cosmetic reasons unless some form of atresia microtia is in evidence. Surgery may help improve quality of hearing. A higher level or grade 2 microtia results in a partly developed external ear and commonly is connected with some hearing impairment or complete hearing loss. Grade 2 frequently has some degree of atresia microtia present. In this example, surgery would be of use for both cosmetic and functional reasons.

Grade 3 microtia, is the most common level. When a kid is born with grade 3 atresia microtia, a small nub or piece of skin will be present in place of the ear, and there is no ear canal. Though this is the commonest form, a kid requires medical attention. Grade 4 microtia is the most serious of the grades with no observable ear or anatomical ear structure present.

The reason for this birth problem is unknown at this time. However through advanced medical methods, many kids born with atresia microfia can live normal lives with a bit of help from a medical team and surgery. Hearing loss can be revived in some kids. This birth imperfection happens one in each 6,000-12,000 births. Atresia microtia occurs more frequently in boys than girls and microtia and atresia most commonly occur together. Sometimes both of these common birth imperfections may be accompanied by other conditions requiring additional medical assistance.

A medical team of pros can counsel the absolute best treatment each child diagnosed as having atresia microtia. There are 2 main ways of ear reshaping for microtia, one is to make an external ear using rib carteledge. The other treatment is when an external ear is made from manmade plastic. Both methods require multiple surgery but are similarly effective. Kids generally will be prepared for surgery for microtia congenital ear when they reach four or five years old. The facial bones will have grown and had a chance to mature by this age. Youngsters born with atresia mircrotia may be able to have a happy, healthful life. Medical technologies are repetitively advancing and as more research is done, more answers can be discovered for this congenital birth defect, atresia microtia.
