When You Might Have A Herniated Disc

By Thelma Kent

One of the most common causes of back pain in adults is a herniated disc NJ. More often found in middle-aged people, this problem can occur in almost anyone. Mild herniations heal on their own given time and rest. More severe herniations often require surgery.

The discs that are being talked about sit between the bones of the back, which are called vertebrae. The are filled with a gel-like fluid which cushions the movement of the bones they sit between. When the outer layer of the sac ruptures, the inner layer, filled with the gel, can squeeze outwards and press on the spinal cord. This rupture can occur from trauma or simply age-related wear and tear.

Back pain is the number one symptom associated with this condition, but when the spinal cord is being pressed on, other symptoms such as pain, tingling, weakness or numbness in the lower part of the body can also occur. Herniations can also be completely painless, if they are not pressing on the spinal cord.

Most herniations occur in the lower spine, an area called the lumbar region. The majority of herniations in any area heal without surgery, which is the primary goal of any doctor treating this problem. Steroids for swelling and NSAIDs for pain are often used.

Causes of herniation vary from trauma to excessive sitting for a job. The gel-like interior of the discs dries out as people age, and thus does not herniate as easily after the age of 50. Back pain in older people is thus more commonly related to arthritic changes and other issues than herniation.

If you have having back pain, it is important to see your doctor quickly. If you have associated symptoms such as limb weakness, go immediately. Most herniated disc NJ cases resolve without surgery and thus treatment is primarily focused on pain relief, but other problems that can cause back pain may need more urgent medical attention.
