Mesothelioma Symptom Finally Diagnosed!

By Kenneth P. Smith

The mesothelioma symptoms and signs are complex and their complexity is further aggravated when these take much longer time to become obvious after the healthy human is exposed to the asbestos and inhales its fibers, i.e. after 20 to 50 years or more. Extensive research is going on in the field of health science to early diagnose the disorder, so that its timely and, consequently, effective and perfect cure is possible.

The more indicative mesothelioma symptoms include severe pain in the chest region of the human body due to the accumulation of fluid in the pleural space. This condition is commonly termed as pleural effusion. Cough and shortness of breath are also caused by mesothelioma. Trouble in swallowing and swelling of the neck and face are caused due to the spreading of the cancer beyond the region of mesothelium. In case of peritoneal mesothelioma, weight loss and cachexia also emerge and add to the severity of the disease. Cachexia is the abdominal pain and swelling caused by ascites which is a condition indicative of the fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. Fever, anemia, a blood clotting abnormality disease, and the obstruction of the bowels are also accompanied with peritoneal mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma symptoms are yet another set of abnormalities associated with mesothelioma. Pleura infection is indicated by chest wall pain and blood content in the sputum coming out by coughing, a condition known as hemoptysis. Wheezing, hoarseness and fatigue are also common. In acute and severe pleural mesothelioma, the patient develops many masses of tumor followed by pneumothorax, a collapse of the lungs. Under such conditions, the malignancy metastasizes and damages other vital parts of the body as well.

Yet another variation in the disease, specified by tumors affecting the abdominal cavity, is much dangerous in nature because it does not reveal any mesothelioma symptoms till the time these tumors are at the last stage of their development and thus very difficult to be removed. In case of most severity, there happens clotting of the blood in the veins and consequently leading to thrombophlebitis. Often, severs bleeding occurs in many organs of the body termed as disseminated intravascular coagulation. Jaundice leading to the yellowing of the eyes and skin follows thereafter. Low blood sugar level is another indicative of the complexity. Arteries of the lungs are blocked by blood clotting and pulmonary emboli. One side of the lungs is usually affected by the pleural tumors and nor it even spreads to adrenal glands, brain or to the bones in most of the cases.

Owing to the intricacy and the resemblance of the mesothelioma symptoms with many other diseases, its diagnosis is more often difficult and complicated. Somehow, the immediate history of the victim offers the first clue. Past exposure of the patient to asbestos moves the case in favor of mesothelioma. After the history analysis, physical examination of the affected is carried out with the help of chest X-ray and tests performed on the functioning of the lungs. Pleural thickening can easily be revealed by X-ray results. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and CT or CAT scan are then followed. While applying cytopathology, abnormal cells are detected as an indicative of a large amount of fluid present, which is aspirated, with the help of syringe. After the symptoms are clearly revealed, appropriate treatment is started. The different methods include surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and heated intra-operative intra-peritoneal chemotherapy and multi-modality therapy.
