The Treatment Fexofenadine HCL Info

By Kelvin Upton

Many people take fexofenadine HCL, which is also a medication called Allegra. It is a systemic antihistamine commonly prescribed by providers for allergies. This means that it gets into the whole body system and works with the allergens therein.

This is commonly used by those with urticaria and rhinitis. Rhinitis is a condition that is affected by seasonal allergies and issues such as watering, itching and red eyes as well as sneezing and scratchy throat. Those with urticaria skin problems see fewer lesions with its use.

Some medications will have interactions with this, including antacids, Erythromycin, Ketoconazole or anything indicating it includes magnesium hydroxide. Those people that have renal impairments should consult with a doctor before taking this medicine. It is not known if it will transfer through breast milk.

Some very common side effects would include vomiting, ear infections, and diarrhea, dizziness, and indigestion, fever and leg or arm pains. Tongue or lip swelling, rash, painful menstruation, insomnia and nervousness are more serious side effects. You should get help immediately if you have any of the latter effects, and tell the doctor how long it has been since you took the medication.

You can take this medication with food or without it, but some foods or drinks could cause it to work incorrectly. Do not have apple, grapefruit or orange juice with a dose, because it will fail. Also avoid alcohol because it will cause a more intense reaction. Some antacids include aluminum or magnesium and these should be avoided or taken more than 2 hours after or before a dose.

Fexofenadine HCL is available in prescription strengths, but lower dosages can be purchased over the counter. You should always take the lowest dosage to deal with the situation for younger and elderly people. For details on this and other medicines, speak to a local pharmacist.
