I continued to research, on and off campus. I found that 32% of women at my university between the ages of 18 and 29 owned either a stun gun, taser gun, or pepper spray and carry it with them frequently. Furthermore, they do in fact feel safer having the device. I also found that 79% of the total group studied in the same age range would buy one of those weapons (whether it be an additional device or their first one.) Weirdly enough, only 5% of the women studied said they would never purchase a self defense product.
These results only suggested one thing - self defense weapons do in fact help women feel safer. The only thing that separates the positive and negative instances is if the women know how to use the device(s). As such, if in the future a female comes up to me to ask me my opinion on pepper spray and stun guns, I will be confident in my answer: I whole-heartedly condone their use, but only when their operators are well-versed in utilizing their devices.
