Kissing Disease Mono

By Rickey Henolap

Mononucleosis is an illness that is caused by the Epstein - Barr virus (EBV). A symptom of Mononucleosis is severe fatigue. A headache often accompanies the tiredness. A strong symptom of mononucleosis is a severe sore throat which is often thought to be strep throat. But the illness mimics the flu with fever, chills and muscle aches.

The number one suggested home remedy for the treatment of mononucleosis is bed rest. Since the body is fighting a viral infection, full attention of the body's defense systems should be concentrated on fighting off foreign species. For the same reason, the affected should not participate in intense physical activity. Strenuous exercise could also lead to the rupturing of the spleen which should be avoided at all costs.

To lessen the symptom of mononucleosis, fatigue, all the person can do is rest. It may be that the sufferer will miss a lot of work or school, but this is the only thing that can be done to ease this particular symptom of mononucleosis. It is recommended that people with mono admit to themselves that they are tired and need to lie down and then they have to do just that.

The confusing factor about the disease is the nature of the symptoms of mononucleosis that very much resemble those of a common flu. During the first few days the symptoms of mononucleosis will include persistent fatigue, severe headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, fever and muscle pains. In the beginning most people would be sure they are dealing with a flu. However, if those conditions persist for more than ten days, one is likely to be facing the symptoms of mononucleosis.

Mononucleosis can often cause a person to have a sore throat, so it is important that a person gargle a few times a day to help relieve it. Gargling helps get rid of the bacteria in the throat and helps reduce the swelling. There are many things that available for a person to gargle with, but it is recommended that a person use either salt water or licorice for the best results.

It takes a simple blood test to diagnose the "kissing disease" and although the symptoms of mononucleosis are quite unpleasant and may persist for several weeks, the disease is perfectly treatable. The goal of treatment in most cases is to relieve the symptoms like getting some rest, using pain relievers and fever reducers and drinking lots of fluids in order to avoid dehydration. The fever usually disappears within ten days while the feeling of general discomfort will probably go away in four to six weeks.
